Sweaty Hands
Palmar hyperhidrosis is a condition that results in excessive hand sweating. In other words, far more sweat than is necessary to cool the body is produced by the hands. Hand hyperhidrosis can be aggravated spontaneously by anxiety, hot and spicy food, or stress.
The team at Perth Sweat Clinic can assess, diagnose and treat your hyperhidrosis with our minimally invasive cure for sweaty hands.
What Causes Hyperhidrosis?
The sympathetic nervous system controls the body’s sweat glands and maintains temperature regulation. In patients with Hyperhidrosis, this system is overactive, resulting in an inappropriate amount of sweat from their hands and feet, regardless of the temperature.
The nervous system runs across the back of the chest cavity and specific nerves over the 2nd and 3rd ribs control a hand’s sweat glands. The exact cause behind the overactivity of these nerves has not yet been identified.
Hyperhidrosis typically starts in a patient’s early teens and continues into adolescence. This can negatively affect people’s confidence and willingness to participate in social interactions. In 50% of patients, sweaty hands have been passed down by one or both parents.
Sweaty palms can cause three major issues:
- Social isolation and self-consciousness — patients often suffer in silence, unaware that their condition can be easily treated.
- Physical difficulties as sweaty palms can make it hard to grip glass and metal objects. Sweaty hands can also smudge paper and even damage keyboards and other electronics, in severe cases.
- A chronic skin infection that leads to a condition called bromhidrosis
How to Stop Sweaty Hands
