Dr Sanjay Sharma MBBS (UWA), FRACS (Cardiothoracic Surgery), Cardiothoracic Fellow (Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA), Associate Adjunct Clinical Professor (Curtin Medical School) is an experienced surgeon specialising in Heart (cardiac) and Lung (thoracic) surgery. He has undergone extensive training in both disciplines in Australia and Internationally.

Sanjay has particular expertise in minimally invasive management of Hyperhidrosis (Excessive sweating from the Armpits and Hands). “The delight of shaking a patients dry hand after surgery is one of the most gratifying aspects of being a Surgeon”

Dr Sharma is one of Perth’s busiest Cardiothoracic Surgeons performing Cardiac surgery including coronary artery bypass, valve repair and replacement, aneurysm repair in addition to minimally invasive lung surgery for lung cancer.

Sanjay was born in the USA migrating to Perth as a young child. His schooling was undertaken at Duncraig Senior High School before completing his Medical Degree (MBBS) at UWA in 1992.

He underwent a six year surgical training program in Cardiothoracic Surgery at Royal Perth Hospital as well as in the Eastern States and New Zealand, before obtaining his Fellowship in 2002 at the age of 32 years being one of the youngest Cardiothoracic Surgeons in Australia.

Sanjay underwent post Fellowship training at the prestigious Brigham and Women’s’ Hospital, Harvard medical school, Boston Massachusetts in 2002 and 2003. He trained under eminent Surgeon Professor Lawrence Cohn, Virginia & James Hubbard Professor of Cardiac Surgery, Harvard Medical School.

His post fellowship training was in advanced techniques of minimally invasive valve surgery, transplantation and blood conservation principles in addition to lung cancer surgery and chest wall reconstruction. He also developed a keen interest in Hyperhidrosis surgery for sweating treatment.

Sanjay commenced practice on return to Perth in 2004 at the Mount Hospital and Fremantle Hospital. He became Head of Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Fremantle Hospital in 2011 until its transfer to Fiona Stanley Hospital in 2015. He introduced blood conservation principles rapidly decreasing transfusion requirements for surgical patients.

Sanjay established the Thoracic Surgical programmes at St John of God Murdoch (2012)and at Joondalup Health Campus(2015). He serves on the Medical Advisory Committee and Clinical Review Committee of the Mount Hospital and is a Senior Instructor with the Royal College of Surgeons. He has published and presented extensively in peer-reviewed journals.

I completed my Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Curtin University, Bentley, from 2007 to 2011, and started working as Graduate Registered Nurse at The Mount Hospital from 2012.
During this time, I have worked in the operating theatre and on Surgical Cardiothoracic and Vascular wards. Currently I am working as a clinical Nurse Coordinator.
I have also completed my Graduate certificate in clinical nursing from University of Notre Dame in Fremantle in 2013.
I love my job and am passionate about exploring different aspects of nursing. I like to help my patients in the best possible way to achieve desired outcomes for their health and wellbeing.

I began my studies at the University of Notre Dame, graduating with a Bachelor of nursing in 2013. I continued my studies in 2014, compeleting a post garduate certificate in clinical nursing. In 2015 I started working in theatres at the Mount hospital and made my way into perioperative cardiothoracic nursing. In 2018 i graduated from a post graduate diploma of perioperative nursing. I have always been passionate about helping others in all aspects of healthcare, so that is why I continue to grow and learn as a nurse.
